Every time a new season rolls around I get the itch to rearrange, reorganize and redecorate. Anyone else feel the same? The reality though is that being on a budget doesn’t always make a complete room makeover practical, however, sometimes just a few adjustments here and there (and maybe a few new additions) is all that’s needed to achieveΒ that fresh and new feeling.

We recently just finished designing our master bedroom (only after being in our home for 2 years), but over the last few months my nightstand has become the catch-all spot for not only my own junk, but sippie cups, tissue boxes, wires, and kids toys. The clutter was beginning to stress me out and that’s the last feeling I want to have before settling in for a good night’s rest. So I decided it was time to de-clutter and give the only personal space I have in the whole house, a little refresh.

First things first – I cleared everything off the nightstand and assessed what needed to go and what needed to stay. I was left with my lamp and the art hanging on the wall above. From there IΒ  made a list of what I else I needed andΒ headed to Mapleview Centre to pick out a few new accessories.

Is your nightstand due for a little makeover as well? Here are 7 things every well-styled nightstand needs to have.

1. Lamp: The size of your lamp should match the size of your table (small-scale table/small lamp – you get the picture). Whatever you decide on, make sure it provides adequate lighting and you can easily reach it from in bed.
2. Art: Hanging art or leaning art, I like to go big or go home. Art really anchors a vignette and sets the tone for the rest of the design.
3. Books: A stack of books create height, dimension and easy access to your favorite reads.
4. Flowers: Just a few fresh flowers (or a plant) really brighten up a room and is a welcome sight first thing in the morning.
5. Tray: Every nightstand need a catch-all for rings, lipbalm or any other trinket that needs a home.
6. Something Vintage: A special photo, trinket or piece of jewelry that has sentimental value is a really nice decor addition to any personal space, such as your bed side table.

For my little space I picked up these essentials from Mapleview Centre: A new coffee table book (pink of course) from Indigo, a little tray from Sears, a candle and a diffuser from Hudson’s Bay and a tassle from Bombay. From there I went ‘shopping’ in my own house for some items that could look “new” on the nightstand. I found a vintage alarm clock (doesn’t work, but who cares – it looks good!), another pink book, some jewelry and a speaker to listen to calming music while unwinding.

Freshening up a little space like this with just a few new additions can do much for your sanity (no more kids stuff in mamas room), and make your personal space just that much more YOU!
